Purple Knights Earn Key ECC Baseball Split With Dowling

Shirley, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team picked up a key East Coast Conference doubleheader split and snapped a four-game losing streak with a 7-1 victory over the host Dowling College Golden Lions in game two of the twin bill after falling, 10-3, in game one.  With the split, the Purple Knights are now 23-19-1 overall and 12-10 in the ECC.  Dowling is now 23-22 overall and 13-10 in conference play.

On the mound in game two, junior, right-hander Denis Lyman (Kingston, N.Y.) pitched a complete game gem, allowing only one run on four hits over his seven innings on the mound.  Lyman, who even his season record at 2-2, struck out six and did not issue a walk.

Junior Casey McCone (Milford, Conn.) led the UB offense in game two blasting a three-run first inning home run, his fifth big fly of the season, and driving in two more runs in the top of the seventh inning.

Sophomore Ben Torres (Hollywood, Fla.) had two hits and knocked in a run in game two for the winners, and junior Casey Ouellette (New Canaan, Conn.) had Bridgeport's other run batted in the nightcap.

In game one, sophomore Daren Grabowski (Berlin, Conn.) and junior Justin Carey (Amherst, Mass.) each went 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI, and McCone drove in the Purple Knights other run to give him six runs batted on the day.

The same two teams will close out the four-game, weekend ECC series on Sunday at 6:00 p.m. with a single game at Bridgeport's Ballpark at Harbor Yard.  Sunday will also be Senior Night for the Purple Knights.
