Purple Knights Blasts STAC, 84-50, To Take Number One Seed In ECC Tourney

Bridgeport, CT-The University of Bridgeport men's basketball team wrapped up the top seed in next week's East Coast Conference Championship Tournament and grabbed a share of the 2009-10 ECC regular season title with C.W. Post on Sunday afternoon by virtue of an 84-50 home win over the St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans. With the win, UB finishes the regular season with an overall record of 21-8 and an ECC mark of 18-3. Bridgeport takes the top seed in the ECC tourney because the Purple Knights won two of three meetings with C.W. Post this season. UB heads into the ECC Championship Tournament having won 13 of its last 14 games. STAC closes out its season at 6-21 overall and 5-15 in conference action.

Bridgeport will next be in action in the semifinals of the ECC Championship Tournament, which will be played at C.W. Post University in Brookville, NY, on Saturday, March 6 at 5:00 p.m. against the winner of Wednesday night's game between NYIT and Molloy.
 
Senior Kirk Williams (White Plains, NY) led Bridgeport in scoring on Sunday with 12 points in only 15 minutes played.
 
Just shy of double figures for the Purple Knights in the win over STAC were senior Steve Martin (Philadelphia, PA) and junior Msoo Ikyaator (Nigeria, West Africa), who each netted nine points.
 
Senior Demetrious Phillips (Baltimore, MD) had and excellent game on the glass grabbing nine rebounds, and Phillips also added seven points for the winners.
 
STAC's Justin Brown led all scorers in the game with 15 points.
 
Bridgeport was red-hot from the floor all game long hitting 33-of-55 shots (60.0%), including connection on 18-of-25 (72.0%) from the floor in the second half.
 
The Bridgeport defense limited St. Thomas Aquinas to a field goal percentage of only 30.0 % for the contest (15-of-50).
