Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport men's soccer team picked up its first win of the 2016 season with a convincing 4-1 East Coast Conference home win over the visiting Roberts Wesleyan College Redhawks on Friday afternoon. With the victory, Bridgeport is now 1-10-2 overall and 1-3-2 in conference play. RWC slips to 3-10-1 overall and 2-6-0 in the ECC. The win also gives UB first-year head coach Peter Doenit his first triumph on the Purple Knights' bench.
Bridgeport raced out to a quick 2-0 lead on Friday as junior Femi Coker (Johannesburg, South Africa) scored his fourth goal of the season off a lovely assist from freshman Nikolai Vadseth (Langevaag, Norway) at the 11:02 mark of the first half.
The same duo would switch roles just over seven minutes later as Vadesth found the back of the net off a feed from Coker.
Roberts Wesleyan would cut the Purple Knights lead in half to 2-1 when Malcolm Shaw fired home a free kick from just outside the penalty area at the 28:19 mark of play, and the score would stand at 2-1 in favor of the home team at the halftime interval.
Just 2:16 into the second half, Vadseth would complete a brace when he scored his third goal of the year off an assist from senior Luis Fajardo (Danbury, Conn.).
UB freshman Jake Atkinson (Stamford, Conn.) would wrap up the scoring in the match when he put home a penalty kick for his third goal of 2016 with 17:35 to play in the tilt.
The four goals are a single-game, season-high for the Purple Knights.
Bridgeport senior goalkeeper Fabio Junior (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) picked up the win in net for the Purple Knights making two saves in just over 85 minutes of action, and sophomore Juan Munoz (Bogota, Columbia) finished up the victory for his team.
The UB men's soccer team is back in action on Sunday morning at 11:00 a.m., when the Purple Knights host the Wildcats of Daemen College in an ECC matchup.
