Men's Soccer Sees 2016 Season End With Heartbreaking 3-2 Overtime Loss At Mercy

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport men's soccer team saw its 2016 season come to a tough end on Saturday afternoon, as the Purple Knights fell to the host Mercy College Maverick, 3-2, on a goal just 28 seconds into overtime.  Bridgeport closes out the 2016 campaign with a 3-11-2 overall record and 3-4-2 East Coast Conference mark. Mercy ends the season at 9-4-3 overall and 3-4-2 also in the ECC.

Saturday's match was scoreless until deep in the second half when the Purple Knights, playing a man down after starting goalkeeper Fabio Junior (Sr., Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) received his second yellow card of the afternoon for a hard foul outside his box at the 64:59 mark, netted the first goal of day when sophomore Jhonah-George Felipe (Kailua, Hawaii) scored his first goal of the season off an assist from freshman Erlend Skagestad (Mjoendalen, Norway) with just over 20 minutes to play in regulation.  Just over five minutes later, the host mavericks would tie things up at 1-1 on a goal by Hachi Verjoni, ad they would take a 2-1 lead with only 3:59 to play in regulation when Gonzalo Prando headed home a free kick from Lucca Lacerda, who assisted on both of the Mavs' first two goals.

The visiting Purple Knights would not go quietly even playing a man down, as Skagestad scored his second goal of the year off an assist from classmate Yoel Salvador (Bridgeport, Conn.) with only 2:31 to go on the second half, and the score would stay level at 2-2 heading into overtime.

Mercy's Santiago Corral would unfortunately break the hearts of Bridgeport fans when he headed home the game-winner just 28 second into overtime.
