New Haven, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport women's gymnastics team won its fourth event in six outings so far in the 2012 season, as the Purple Knights topped the standings in Saturday's four-team, Yale University Bulldog Invitational. Bridgeport complied its second highest team score of the season on Saturday amassing a total of 193.075 points. Yale was second with 190.400 points, Springfield College third with a score of 185.626 and Rhode Island College was fourth with a total of 170.700.
Bridgeport junior Monica Mesalles Salleras (Barcelona, Spain) won the all-around event on Saturday with a score of 38.525 in the four events. Monica took first place on the vault with a score of 9.850 and also won the floor exercise with a score of 9.800. On the beam, she took fourth place with a score of 9.700, and Monica was thirteenth on the bars with a score of 9.175.
The Purple Knights finished one-two on the balance beam, as senior Emily Repko (Gilbertsville, Pa.) won the event with a score of 9.800, and classmate Caroline McAvity (Rothesay, New Brunswick, Canada) was second with a score of 9.750. Repko also finished fourth in the floor exercise with a score of 9.700, and teammates freshman Sasha Tsikhanovich (Marysville, Ohio) with a 9.675, senior Jessica Watts (Marietta, Ga.) with a 9.625, plus freshman Caitlin Perry (N. Kingston, R.I.) with a 9.575 finished in fifth through seventh places in the same event.
Sophomore Emily Turik (Crystal Lake, Ill.) was the Purple Knights' top finisher on the bars, as she tied for third place with a score of 9.750.
Next up, Bridgeport travels to Fort Worth, Texas next Saturday night (February 18) for the Metroplex Invitational where they will face Stanford and Brown. Action gets underway in Texas at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time next Saturday.
