Piscataway, N.J.-The University of Bridgeport women's gymnastics team took first place in the team standings at the Rutgers University Quad Meet on Saturday night in front of a standing room only crowd of over 700 fans in RU's Livingston Gym. UB won the event with a team score of 193.875 just edging out second place Eastern Michigan University, as the Eagles totaled 193.125 points. The host Scarlet Knights of Rutgers were third with 192.400 points, and Air Force was fourth with 190.950 points. The 193.875 are the Purple Knights second highest team total of the 2012 season.
For the third straight week, junior Monica Mesalles Sallares (Barcelona, Spain) won the all-around competition as she compiled a score of 39.250 in Saturday's four events breaking her own school record. Monica won two events at Rutgers taking first place in the vault with a 9.900 for the second consecutive meet and winning the floor exercise with a UB recird score 9.925. She tied for second place on the balance beam with teammate Emily Repko (Gilbertsville, Pa.) as they both scored 9.800, and Mesalles Sallares tied for eleventh on the bars with a score of 9.625.
In the vault, sophomore Kamri Riles (Ellenwood, Ga.) tied for third place with a score of 9.775.
Along with her strong performance on the beam, Emily Repko tied for fifth place in the floor exercise with a score of 9.825, just behind teammate, senior Jessica Watts (Marietta, Ga.) who grabbed fourth place with a score of 9.850.
On the bars, sophomore Lissette La Fex (Diamond Bar, Calif.) was UB's top finisher taking second place with a score of 9.825, and freshman Sasha Tsikhanovich (Marysville, Ohio) was fifth with a score of 9.725.
Junior Chelsea Matteson (Phoenix, Az.) had a fine night on the beam for the Purple Knights tying for fifth place with an outstanding score of 9.750.
The Purple Knights return to gymnastics action next Saturday night, March 3 at the University of New Hampshire with Maryland and Brown. Action gets underway in the Granite State ate 7:00 p.m.
