Women's Soccer Falls To Franklin Pierce, 4-1, In NCAA Play
Bridgeport, CT-Franklin Pierce's potent scoring
duo of junior Angelika Johansson (Falkenberg,
Sweden) and senior Gabriela Demoner (Vitoria,
Brazil) each scored twice and sophomore goalkeeper Jocelyn
Leon (Lenox, MA) made nine saves in net to help lead the
Ravens (18-4-1) to a 4-1 win over the University of Bridgeport
Purple Knights (16-2-3) in a Second Round East Region NCAA Division
II Women's Soccer Championship match played at Knights Field in
Bridgeport, Conn. on Sunday afternoon.
Johansson got the Ravens on the board at the 20:17 mark of the
first half when she scored firing home a shot off a cross from
junior Shona Franklin (Birmingham, England) that
was misplayed by the Bridgeport defense.
Demoner would then score what became the game-winning
goal just over four minutes later when she scored her 31st goal of
the 2009 season off a free kick take by junior Kelly
Weygand (Bridgewater, MA).
The match entered the second half with Franklin Pierce leading
2-0, and the Ravens would up their lead to 3-0 at the 52:38 when
Johansson netted her second goal of the match and 20th of the
season off another assist from Shona Franklin.
Bridgeport made things interesting 14 minutes later when
freshman Leah Gallie (Palmerston North, New
Zealand) scored off a scramble in front of the FPU
goal. Senior Emma Woolley (Sheffield,
England) was credited with the assist on Gallie's eighth goal of
2009.
Demoner would put things away for Franklin Pierce when she
netted her 32nd goal of 2009 at the 79:39 mark, when she scored an
unassisted tally weaving her way through the UB defense.
Franklin Pierce now moves on to face the College of St. Rose
in Albany, NY on Friday in the East Region final.
