Bridgeport, Conn.-The top-seeded University of Bridgeport women's soccer team advanced to the finals of the 2016 East Coast Conference Championship Tournament with a 4-0 home win over the fourth-seeded Roberts Wesleyan College Redhawks on Wednesday night. Bridgeport, ranked number seven in the nation and winners of 12 straight matches, will now host the second-seeded Pioneers of LIU Post, 2-0 winners over Mercy College earlier on Wednesday, on Friday at 3:00 p.m. The victory lifts the Purple Knights, who will be making their fifth consecutive ECC Championship Finals appearance, to a 15-3-0 overall record. Roberts Wesleyan is now 10-5-2 on the year. The winner of Friday's match between Bridgeport and LIUP will receive an automatic bid to the 2016 NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Championship Tournament which will begin next week.
Bridgeport outshot Roberts Wesleyan by a whopping 33-10 margin on Wednesday, but Redhawks' freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Brinkel (Rochester, N.Y.) was outstanding all night long making a total of 15 saves to keep her team in the match.
The Purple Knights did not get on the scoreboard until there was only 7:32 remaining in the first half when senior Hanne Neby (Furnes, Norway) scored her sixth goal of 2016 off a nice feed off a ball chested down by graduate student Idoia Agirre (Legazpi, Spain).
Leading 1-0 into the second half, UB would then score three goals in a span of just under 15 minutes between the 51:27 and 66:13 marks to put the match away.
Agirre would then score her 24th goal of the year off a through ball from Gamby to give the Purple Knights' a 3-0 advantage, and then sophomore Rebecka Ronnegard (Norrkoping, Sweden) capped the scoring on the night with her first goal of the year on a long shot to the top of the RWC net.
Agirre has also now scored at least one goal in 11 consecutive matches.
Bridgeport sophomore goalkeepers Jennifer Wendelius (Lidingo, Sweden) and Melanie Ziegner (Münster, Germany) shared the shutout for Bridgeport with Wendelius starting and making two saves to pick up win number 11 on the season.
