UB Swim Teams Make Final Preparations For 2010 NCAA D II National Championship Meet

Bridgeport, CT-After a fine showing at this year's Metropolitan Conference Championships, the University of Bridgeport men's and women's swimming teams are in their final preparations for the 2010 NCAA Division II National Championships which will be held at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton, OH from March 10 through March 13. The Purple Knights will depart campus on Monday, March 8 to head for the meet which will be hosted by Lock Haven (PA) University.

At the 2010 Metro Conference Championships, the UB women were the top Division I/II finisher and were second overall, and the Bridgeport men, in the inaugural season as a varsity program, took second place in the D I/II standings and were sixth overall.

Six UB women will be heading to the 2010 Division II National Championship Alena Gorlanova (SR, Omsk, Russia), Anna Krasnowska (FR, Kedzierzyn-Kozle, Poland), Anna Kwiatkowska (SO, Warsaw, Poland), Roxana Purcelea (JR, Constanta, Romania), Sandra Schmitz (SO, Breuhl, Germany) plus Maris Visse (SO, Tallinn, Estonia) and five men Julio Lopez (FR, Monterrey, Mexico), Eddie Phillips (FR, Missouri City, TX), Piotr Safronczyk (JR, Bialystok, Poland), Nikola Savic (Novi Sad, Serbia) and Toni Valcic (FR, Ribnica, Slovenia) will be heading to Ohio.

Here is a listing of the individual events that each UB swimmer will compete in at the 2010 Division II National Championship.

For the women:

Alena Gorlanova: 100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard breaststroke

Anna Krasnowska: 100-yard IM

Anna Kwiatkowska: 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle

Roxana Purcelea: 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle

Sandra Schmitz: 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke, 200-yard backstroke

Maris Visse: 1,000-yard freestyle, 400-yard IM, 200-yard butterfly

For the men:

Julio Lopez: 200-yard butterfly

Piotr Safronczyk: 200-yard IM, 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke

Nikola Savic: 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke

Toni Valcic: 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle

The Bridgeport women will also race in four relay events:

200-yard medley relay:

200-yard freestyle relay

800-yard freestyle relay

400-yard freestyle relay

The UB men will compete in three relay events at the 2010 Nationals:
