In early August 2009, University of Bridgeport Director of Athletics, Jay Moran named Leo Uzcategui as the Purple Knights' head women's volleyball coach. Uzcategui brings a wealth of collegiate and international volleyball experience to the UB campus, as he served as head women’s volleyball coach at both Central Connecticut State and Florida Atlantic Universities and also was the head coach of the Venezuelan Men’s National Volleyball at two World University Games.
Last season was a history-making one for the Bridgeport volleyball team, as the Purple Knights won the school's first-ever NCAA Division II East Regional Title and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight in San Bernardino, California. In 2011, UB posted a 21-8 overall record. Uzcategui was also selected as the AVCA East Region Coach of the Year for the second time in three seasons last year.
In 2010, the Purple Knights posted a 25-5 overall record and tied for first place in the East Coast Conference regular season standings. UB also advanced to the NCAA Division II Regional Final for the second straight year.
In 2009, Uzcategui led the Purple Knights to the school's first ever East Coast Conference title, and the team fell just one match shy of advancing to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight. the 2009 squad also set a single-season school record for victories as UB posted a 33-7 overall mark, and he was named AVCA Division II East Region Coach of the Year plus East Coast Conference Co-Coach of the Year.
A native of Venezuela, Uzcategui earned a Bachelor’s Degree from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, and he also holds a degree in Sports Psychology from Florida International University.
Coach Leo came to the United States in 1983 after a distinguished coaching career in both Brazil and Venezuela that saw him head the men’s Venezuelan University National Team from 1978 to 1982.
He began his United States’ collegiate coaching career as the assistant women’s volleyball coach at Florida Atlantic in 1988 and was elevated to head coach at FAU in 1989 where he piloted the Owls until moving to Central Connecticut State in 1995. Uzcategui was the Blue Devils’ head coach from 1995-2000.
