In 2012-13, Mike Ruane will begin his 13th season as head coach of the University of Bridgeport Purple Knights. Last seson, UB posted a 19-10 overall record and advanced to the East Coast Conference Tournament Championship final.  Coach Ruane, the 2011 ECC Coach of the Year, has guided his team to seven 20-win seasons in the last 10 years and six NCAA bids that same span.  In 201-11, UB posted a 19-9 record and captured the East Coast Conference regular season title. In 2009-10, his team posted a 23-9 record and advanced to the NCAA East Regional after winning the schools first-ever East Coast Conference title.  Coach Ruane's career record is an impressive 228-130 over his 12 years on the Purple Knights' bench.  He earned his 200th career win on January 29, 2011 when the Purple Knights defeated St. Thomas Aquinas, 80-53.

His success is not confined to the court though as Ruane, one of the premier coaches in the Northeast Region, was also honored in 2004 and 2006 with the Sam Schoenfeld Sportsmanship Award, given to a program that exemplifies "the highest degree of sportsmanship, character, and ethics among their players, coaches and spectators." In 2002-2003, Ruane has led UB to a record of 23-8, an NCAA appearance, and UB's best record since the 1992-1993 season and was named the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC) Coach of the Year.

In 2005 Ruane was named the Bridgeport Sportsperson of the Year for his contributions to the Bridgeport community. He is credited as the Bridgeport native who had the “most positive impact on the sports community” for the year.
