University of Bridgeport To Discontinue Men’s & Women’s Swimming Programs At End Of Academic Year
Bridgeport, Conn.–The University of Bridgeport announced today that it will discontinue its men's and women's swim programs effective at the end of the current academic year. This follows a comprehensive evaluation of the athletic program and sports sponsorship and the need for strategic redistribution of resources in the Athletic Department. Contributing factors in making the decision include low participation numbers on the women's side and the absence of diving within both the men's and women's teams. A member of the East Coast Conference and NCAA Division II, the University of Bridgeport will continue to sponsor 11 varsity athletic programs.
"This was a very difficult decision to announce as an AD," said Director of Athletics Anthony Vitti. "As a former student-athlete, please know that this decision did not come easily as I experienced firsthand the heart and effort that our student-athletes and coaches put into their practice and competitions. We take great pride in our Athletic program and are confident that this difficult change will positively impact our program for the future."
We appreciate the time, talent, and effort of all the students and coaches who have represented UB's men's and women's swim teams. They have made us proud and will always be a Purple Knight.
UB will work closely with the affected student-athletes to support them if they choose to continue their studies at UB. A student-athlete who wishes to transfer and compete at another institution will be given their full and immediate release.
