University of Bridgeport Announces Cancellation of 2020 Fall Sports Season
UB announces it has cancelled all sports for the fall semester due to the ongoing health and safety concerns presented by the coronavirus pandemic
The University of Bridgeport announced today it has cancelled all sports for the fall semester due to the ongoing health and safety concerns presented by the coronavirus pandemic. Spring semester sports will be evaluated at a later time as the state and national situation unfolds.
"Though we are understandably disappointed for our student-athletes, coaches, staff, University community and fans, we believe that this decision is in the best interest of maintaining as safe and healthy an environment as possible on our campus," said Stephen Healey, interim president of the University of Bridgeport. "As always, the number one priority remains the safety and well-being of all members of our campus community."
Athletics aid for student-athletes for the upcoming 2020-21 year will be honored.
"This has been an incredibly difficult decision for our leadership team. We fully realize the impact it has on our student-athletes and coaches. However, we also recognize the uncertainties and health implications associated with COVID-19," said Lou Izzi, vice president for Enrollment Management & Athletics.
This decision aligns with the University of Bridgeport's vigilance in planning for the return to campus in the fall. An ongoing and dynamic planning process that has taken place over the last several months has resulted in a multi-phase return to campus plan for the fall. Specific guidelines within the plan adhere to local, state, and national agency recommendations. Everyone in the UB community is asked to do their part in complying with the guidelines.
