UB Athletics Visits Roosevelt School to Celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day
Purple Knights continue yearly tradition with sports clinic for grades 3-8.
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. - In celebration of National Girls and Women in Sports Day, the University of Bridgeport's Athletic Department welcomed the opportunity to give back as members of its women's sports teams visited nearby Roosevelt School on Wednesday (Feb. 4) to lead a fun and engaging youth sports clinic.
Numerous representatives from six of UB's women's athletic programs took part in the visit, with the Purple Knights arriving at Roosevelt in two separate morning sessions. The student-athletes introduced their respective sports to students in grades 3-8, led a variety of drills and games, and took time to answer questions throughout the clinic.
"This day meant a lot to me. When I was younger, I didn't have access to most girls' youth sports," said UB women's lacrosse senior Molly Blackadar. "Being able to show these girls what it's like to be a part of a team is so impactful for their confidence, communication and leadership skills—skills they will carry with them throughout their lives."
According to the Women's Sports Foundation, which founded National Girls and Women in Sports Day in 1987, NGWSD is a celebration that inspires girls and women to play, be active and to realize their full power. The confidence, strength and character gained through sports participation are the very tools girls and women need to become strong leaders in sports and life.
"Girls and Women in Sports Day was an incredible experience as we visited Roosevelt Elementary School and introduced young girls to a variety of sports," said sophomore Maja Nielsen of UB women's soccer. "Playing with them and seeing their energy, excitement and confidence grow was very rewarding. Their enthusiasm for the games we love made the day truly great and reminded us why representation in sports matters."
