Purple Knights Drop Season Finale At Molloy, 8-3
UB Will Be Number Two Seed In ECC Baseball Championship Tournament
Uniondale, N.Y.-The host Molloy College Lions broke a 3-3 tie with five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, as the Lions posted an 8-3 East Coast Conference baseball win over the University of Bridgeport Purple Knights in the regular season finale for both teams. With the win, Molloy takes first place in the ECC regular season standings with a 22-8 conference mark. UB finishes one game back of Molloy with a 21-9 ECC record, and the Purple Knights are now 28-12 overall. The Lions complete their regular season at 31-18.
Bridgeport will be the number two seed in the 2011 ECC Baseball Championship Tournament which will begin on Thursday, May 12th and run through Saturday, May 14th at Dowling College. The Purple Knights will face the number three seed and host Dowling College Golden Lions at 12 noon on Thursday, and Molloy will face number four seed St. Thomas Aquinas College at 3:00 pm. that same afternoon. The ECC Championship Tournament is a double-elimination format.
Trailing 3-0 entering the top of the sixth inning, Bridgeport tied the game on an RBI single by freshman Jesse Solar (Marlton, N.J.), a bases-loaded walk to freshman John Ascenzia (West Haven, Conn.) and a fielders' choice by senior Peter Barrows (Old Saybrook, Conn.). Barrows finished with two hits on the day to raise his season average to .362.
Junior Tom Wiacek (Bolton Landing, N.Y.), who is now 4-3 o the year, took the loss in relief for Bridgeport.
