Flushing, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team picked up an East Coast Conference doubleheader sweep over the Queens (N.Y.) College Knights in New York City on Saturday afternoon, as the Purple Knights playing as the home team took game one, 6-3, and completed the sweep with a 4-2 victory in game two. With the two wins, UB is now 10-30 overall and 7-11 in conference play. QC slips to 12-24 overall and 2-16 in the ECC.
In game one, senior Daren Grabowski (Berlin, Conn.) led off the bottom of the first with his ninth home run of the season.
Sophomore Alex Rauso (Trumbull, Conn.) and senior Mark Komaromi (Bridgeport, Conn.), each had two hits for the winners in the opener, and graduate student Tom Rinaldi (Waterbury, Conn.) and seniors Isaiah Rivera (Newington, Conn.) and Ben Torres (Hollywood, Fla.). each had one run batted in game one.
Sophomore Jason Burger (Orlando, Fla.) worked eight excellent inning to pick up his third win of the year in the opener, as he allowed only one earned run on seven hits with four strikeouts and three walks.
In the nightcap, Grabowski went 4-for-4 with two runs scored, and Rivera added two hits for the victors. Freshman Logan Allen (Magnolia, Texas) had two runs batted in for UB in the second game, and classmate Conall Roberts (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) also had an RBI.
Freshman Anthony Martino (West Sayville, N.Y.), who has pitched in tough luck all season long, picked up the first win of his college career in game two firing a seven-inning, complete game in which he scattered 10 hits, allowing only one earned run while striking out two and issuing only one walk.
The two teams will close out their four-game weekend series with a 10:00 a.m. doubleheader in Flushing tomorrow morning with Queens playing as the home team in their home park.
