Lincoln University, Pa.-The University of Bridgeport baseball team wrapped up its 2019 regular season by earning the number three seed in next week's East Coast Conference Championship Tournament by virtue of a doubleheader split with the host Lincoln (Pa.) University Lions on Saturday afternoon, as UB won game one, 11-8, and the Lions took the nightcap, 7-4. With the split, Bridgeport is now 19-27 overall and 15-13 in the ECC. Lincoln ends 2019 at 2-29 overall and 1-27 in conference play.
In game one, the Purple Knights accumulated 16 hits as a team. Senior Eamon Catherina (Ridgefield, N.J.) and freshman Joey Grillo (Sound Beach, N.Y.), each knocked in three runs, plus sophomore Vincent DeRubeis (Trumbull, Conn.) and freshman Cory Listing (West Sand Lake, N.Y.) had two RBI apiece.
Freshman pitcher Quinton Carpenter (Magnolia, Texas) earned the win in the opener working six innings as the starter allowing four hits and one run. Carpenter is now 4-1 on the season.
In game two, Catherina had two hits and an RBI, and Listing plus junior Alex Rauso (Trumbull, Conn.), each had two hits.
Up next, UB will open the 2019 ECC Championship Tournament on Thursday afternoon at NYIT against the second seed and tournament host Bears.
