BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – In honor of a distinguished athletics career that has spanned over 30 years, University of Bridgeport's head baseball coach Joe Tonelli was recently announced as part of the Southern Connecticut Diamond Club's Hall of Fame Class of 2025. He will officially be recognized at the organization's 17th annual Hall of Fame Banquet and Induction Ceremony on Thursday, Oct. 23, 2025, at The Woodwinds in Branford.
Tonelli's induction into the Southern Connecticut Diamond Club Hall of Fame is a fitting honor for one of the region's most accomplished baseball coaches. He recently completed his 13th season as UB's head coach in 2025. He became the program's all-time wins leader in 2021 while currently holding 406 victories for his career. Tonelli led the Purple Knights to their first NCAA Regional appearance in 2016 and was named ECC Coach of the Year the season before that.
Prior to UB, Tonelli served as an assistant coach at Quinnipiac where he helped the Bobcats to an NCAA Regional berth while producing several professional players. He also started and helped build the baseball program at nearby Albertus Magnus College where he was the head coach from 1990-2003. Tonelli guided the Falcons to multiple conference titles and postseason appearances while earning a pair of Coach of the Year honors—achievements that secured him a spot in the school's Hall of Fame in 2008.
Beyond coaching, Tonelli also has extensive athletic administrative experience at both the college and high school levels. He served as the Director of Athletics at both Albertus Magnus College and Lauralton Hall High School.
As an undergrad, Tonelli was a two-year team captain at Assumption College ('90) in which he earned Northeast-10 All-Conference honors twice and first-team All-New England accolades once during his career.
