Men's Basketball Suffers 83-77 Setback at Caldwell
Purple Knights outscore Cougars in second half but unable to erase 18-point first-half deficit.
CALDWELL, N.J. – The University of Bridgeport's men's basketball team (9-13, 6-9 CACC) came up just short in an 83-77 loss at Caldwell on Wednesday night, despite a strong second-half response that saw the Purple Knights outscore the Cougars by two after the break.
Trailing by eight at halftime, UB erupted for 47 points over the final 20 minutes after scoring just 30 in the opening half.
After falling behind by as many as 18, the Purple Knights put together a 40-25 run spanning the final seven minutes of the first half and the opening eight minutes of the second half to trim the deficit to just three at the 12:02 mark of the second half.
Caldwell answered with a quick 5-0 spurt, however, and Bridgeport would not get closer than five points over the final 10:48 of regulation.
Jason Edokpayi turned in one of his best performances of the season to lead the Purple Knights, finishing with team highs in points (21), rebounds (nine) and blocks (two) while also adding two assists and a steal.
Wednesday marked Edokpayi's fourth 20-point outing of the season and his 17th straight game scoring in double figures.
Jordan Miller provided a major spark off the bench with a season-high 15 points, while Travis Upchurch also posted a season-best scoring effort with nine points on a perfect 3-for-3 shooting night.
Jayson Handy rounded out UB's double-figure scorers with 11 points on an efficient 5-of-7 from the floor.
Jaheem Tyson led UB in the assists category with four helpers off the bench.
