Men's Soccer Knocks Off No. 16 Wilmington, 3-2, on the Road
Purple Knights stay perfect in the CACC (3-0), extend win streak to three in a row.
NEWARK, Del. – Facing a third nationally ranked opponent over their first seven games of the season, the University of Bridgeport's men's soccer team rattled off a 3-2 win at No. 16 Wilmington on Saturday. The Purple Knights have now won three straight games to improve to 3-3-1 overall and a perfect 3-0 in the CACC.
Undeterred by an early one-goal deficit, Bridgeport showed terrific resolve on the road. UB answered an eighth-minute Wilmington goal with three tallies to take a 3-1 lead in the 70th minute. The Purple Knights then hung on for the win despite a second Wildcats' goal with seven minutes to go.
Jose Uresti leveled the contest for UB in the first half when he headed in a beautifully played ball from Alan Flores in the 39th minute. Both Uresti and Flores came in off the bench to spark the Purple Knights in the opening 45.
With the game tied at the break, it was graduate student Enzo Beatrix who ignited the road squad in the second half.
The Frenchman made the most of a turnover by the Wilmington keeper, picking off a pass at the top of the box and one-touching a lefty strike into the back of the net in the 61st minute.
Beatrix then assisted on what became the game winner for UB in the 70th minute. It was another one-touch, this time a through ball that found freshman Kristians Prieditis beyond the Wilmington defense.
Prieditis went on to beat a charging keeper and slot the ball into the back of the net for the 3-1 lead.
Prieditis and Beatrix have now scored a team-best three goals this season while Beatrix is tied with Kaanturk Akgul for the team lead in points (8).
Bridgeport goalkeeper Viktor Mašek finished with two saves to earn his third victory of the year.
Collectively speaking, the Purple Knights put together an 8-4 edge on Wilmington in shots on goal and a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.
