BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Following a pair of sweeps at their home tri-meet on Saturday, the University of Bridgeport's men's and women's swimming and diving teams earned four weekly awards from the Northeast-10 Conference on Tuesday.
The men's side swept the league's honors with award winners Sultanbek Azat (Swimmer of the Week), Christian Toussi (Rookie of the Week), Juan David Urrea Vargas (Diver of the Week) while Amber Militrano represented the UB women as the NE10's Diver of the Week.
Azat delivered a dominant performance on Saturday, capturing a trio of victories to help lead the Purple Knights past Saint Joseph (Conn.) and Roger Williams. The standout swimmer topped the NE10 leaderboard with the conference's fastest times this season in the 800-free (8:20.57) and 400-free (4:00.74), before teaming up with UB's 400-free relay squad to a first-place finish in 3:29.31.
Toussi also turned in a stellar outing during UB's tri-meet sweep, winning four events to help pace the Purple Knights. The Norway native opened the day by helping the 400-medley relay team to victory in 3:51.19, then added individual wins in the 50-free (24.02) and 200-back (2:10.74) before capping the meet with another triumph in the 400-free relay (3:29.31). Toussi has been named the NE10's Rookie of the Week three times this season.
With diving starting the meet last Saturday, Urrea Vargas set the tone for UB in just his third collegiate diving meet. The Colombia native earned first place in the one-meter courtesy of a season-high score of 241.05. That mark is now fifth in the NE10 this season. Urrea Vargas has improved his one-meter score at least 20 points in each of his three meets this season.
Militrano also secured a new season-best in the one-meter on Saturday with a score of 127.85. The West Haven native has improved her performance by over 20 points since UB's opening meet at Fairfield in early October.
