BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – For the second straight week, freshman Sultanbek Azat of the University of Bridgeport's men's swimming and diving team has been named the Northeast-10 Conference's Swimmer and Rookie of the Week. He has now earned eight of UB's 18 NE10 weekly awards this season.
Azat delivered another dominant weekend in the pool, capturing five victories in a pair of home dual meets. He started with three individual wins for the Purple Knights in Friday's dual meet against Fairfield. All three of his winning times rank inside the top six of the NE10 this season.
Azat touched first in the 800-free with a time of 8:34.47, which currently sits fifth in the conference. Azat followed that up with a 1:52.88 in the 200-free, good for sixth in the NE10, before closing his day with a 4:02.83 effort in the 400-free that ranks fifth in the league.
Azat carried that momentum into Saturday's meet against Staten Island, where he again claimed the 800-free title. His time of 8:26.58 in that race would stand as the third-fastest mark in the NE10 this season. Azat also contributed to UB's victory in the 200-free relay against CSI, capping a standout weekend of performances for the Purple Knights.
Azat and the rest of UB's swimming and diving programs will return to action on Friday night (5 p.m.) with a dual meet at Bryant University.
