Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport softball team played a pair of strong games at home on Thursday afternoon, but the Purple Knights came up just short twice as they lost an East Coast Conference doubleheader to the visiting Molloy College Lions, falling game one, 2-1, and losing the nightcap, 5-3. UB is now 9-27 overall and 5-17 in the ECC. Molloy ups its overall mark to 19-20, and the Lions are now 14-5 in conference play.
In the opener, sophomore Ashley Hessler (Pawtucket, R.I.) drove in the Purple Knights' lone run, and classmate Alyssa Bua (Cornwall, N.Y.) pitched well, but was the hard-luck loser firing a complete game in which she allowed seven hits and struck out three while allowing only one walk.
In game two, sophomore Tara Faford (Grafton, Mass.) put on a power display driving in all three UB runs on a solo home run and a two-run blast. Faford now has three homers on the season.
Senior Taylor Hendrickson (Binghamton, N.Y.) did a fine job in relief in the nightcap working three scoreless innings.
Up next, the UB softball team will travel to Queens (N.Y.) College for a Saturday ECC doubleheader.
