Bridgeport, Conn.-The University of Bridgeport softball team played its long-awaited home opening doubleheader on Sunday afternoon in Seaside Park, and the Purple Knights dropped a pair of East Coast Conference games to the visiting NYIT Bears, 11-9, in eight innings in game one, and 2-1, in game two. UB is now 13-12 overall and 2-4 in the ECC. NYIT evens its season mark at 11-1, and the Bears are 5-5 in conference play.
Game one was wild affair that featured 20 combined runs, 26 combined hits and five errors for each team. Trailing 9-6 heading into the bottom of the seventh, the host Purple Knights rallied for three runs to tie the game at 9-9 and send it into extra innings where the Bears plated two in the eighth to take the 11-9 victory.
Freshman Allison Luzzi (East Haven, Conn.) had three hits and three RBI in game one. Classmate Samantha Sabor (Plainfield, Ill.) also had three hits in the opener, and senior Tara Faford (Grafton, Mass.) knocked in two runs.
Sabor added two more hits in the nightcap, and junior Yalitza Rodriguez (Freeport, N.Y.) also had two hits and drove in UB's lone run in the game.
Senior Alyssa Bua (Cornwall. N.Y.) was the hard-luck loser in the pitching circle in game two for Bridgeport, as she pitched a complete game four-hitter in which she fanned five and walked two.
The UB softball team is right back in action at home on Monday, when the Purple Knights host an ECC doubleheader versus Queens (N.Y.) College. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m.
