Dobbs Ferry, N.Y.-A long day of softball got off to a promising start for the University of Bridgeport Purple Knights, as UB won the completion of a suspended game form April 22, 2-1 in 15 innings, but ended in a tough way, as the host Mercy College Mavericks (15-9, 14-6 ECC) swept the regularly scheduled doubleheader taking game one, 7-1, and taking the nightcap, 2-1 in 10 innings on a walk-off home run with one out. After Thursday's play, Bridgeport is now both 14-6 overall and in conference action.
The day began with UB playing as the home team in a game that was stopped due to darkness tied 1-1 after eight innings in Bridgeport on April 22. Freshman Kiana Robinson (Hamden, Conn.) won the game for Bridgeport with a base loaded RBI single in the bottom of the fifteenth. That hit made a winner of sophomore Kaite Burawski (Hartley, Del.) who pitched all 15 innings over the two days of play, and in this 15 frames, she set a single game school record with 23 strikeouts. Burawski allowed only eight hits in the 15 innings, one unearned run and issued only one walk.
In the opener of the doubleheader, the Purple Knights grabbed a 1-0 in the top of the first, but it was all Mercy from then on. Sophomore Taylor Yates (Elk Grove, Calif.) and freshman Hailey Kim (Virginia Beach, Va.) each had two hits for UB in game one.
In game two, Kaite Burawski was the hard luck loser, as she again pitched exceptionally well allowing only five hits with eight strikeouts and only one walk in 9.1 innings pitched.
Bridgeport's offense was limited to only two hits over the 10 innings of game two, and Taylor Yates drove in UB's only run.
Up next, the UB softball team will play its final regular season home games with a Senior Day doubleheader versus Queens (N.Y.) College on Saturday at 12 noon.
Thursday's scheduled doubleheader at the College of Staten Island has been moved to Monday, May 3 with a 4:00 p.m. first pitch due to the forecast for inclement weather tomorrow.
