Washington, D.C.-A three-point basket by Maya Thomas of the University of District of Columbia with eight seconds to play in the game lifted the host Firebirds to a 66-63 East Coast Conference win over the visiting University of Bridgeport Purple Knights in our Nation's Capital on Wednesday evening. The Purple Knights, who never led during the entire contest, trailed by 11 points, 55-44, with 8:02 to play in the game after UDC opened the fourth quarter on a 9-0, but UB battled back to tie the game four times in the final three minutes but could never grab a lead. With the loss, Bridgeport is now 8-12 overall and 4-6 in conference play. The Firebirds, who are also 8-12 overall, are now 5-5 in the ECC.
Junior Kayla Hill (Massapequa, N.Y.) led the Purple Knights scoring a UB career high 20 points. She was joined in double figures by classmate Briana Stoddart (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who saw a game-tying, three-point attempt at the buzzer graze off the rim, with 15 points and senior Samnell Vonleh (Swampscott, Mass.) who scored 11 points, all of which came in the second half.
Graduate student Nkechi "NK" Ilang (Ebonyi State, Nigeria) finished with nine points for the Purple Knights.
UDC's Mia-Alexis Lloyd lead all scorers on the night with 23 points.
Up next, the UB women's basketball team will look to snap a five-game losing streak at home when they host St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday afternoon. Action in Hubbell Gym is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
