Women's Basketball Pulls Away in Second Half to Top Wilmington, 57-43, in CACC Opener
Purple Knights allow just five points in the third quarter, outscore the Wildcats, 36-22, after halftime.
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Playing their first conference game of the season, the University of Bridgeport's women's basketball team earned a 57-43 win over Wilmington on Tuesday night inside Hubbell Gym. The victory pushes the Purple Knights' record to 2-1 this season, including a 1-0 start to CACC play.
Bridgeport ultimately took control of this game with a dominant effort on the boards and a decisive third-quarter surge.
The Purple Knights, who boasted a 52-34 edge on the glass, strung together a 16–5 run in the third quarter to open an 11-point cushion heading into the final period. UB then delivered its most efficient offensive frame of the night, tying its season high with 20 fourth-quarter points while shooting 9-for-17 (52.9%) from the field.
The Purple Knights never let their lead dip below 11 over the final 11:19 and pushed the margin to as many as 18 with 2:21 remaining to seal the victory.
UB's offense was paced by Jaelyn Choi, who was sensational in her Bridgeport debut. The Minnesota native delivered a team-high 18 points off the bench, including a trio of three-pointers. She also added three steals and two assists.
Another UB guard, Savannah Prescott, was superb on Tuesday night as well. The sophomore did a little bit of everything, finishing with a 15-point, seven-rebound, five-steal and three-assist stat line.
In the frontcourt, Zahkiyyah Frazier was a force once again, posting a 14-rebound effort to go along with eight points, one block, and a game-high seven offensive boards.
Frazier has now grabbed double-digit boards in each of UB's three games this season. She currently leads the CACC with an average of 14.0 rebounds per contest.
Alycia Secchiaroli (5 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals) and Karolina Andersson (8 points, 6 rebounds) added steady production for UB, while the Purple Knights' defense held Wilmington to 36.2% shooting from the floor and just five points in the third quarter.
