Women's Basketball Nearly Erases 19-Point Deficit in Tight Loss to STAC
Purple Knights open 4th quarter on 16-2 run, but unable to complete comeback in non-conference loss.
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Despite cutting a 17-point halftime deficit to just one with 1:46 remaining in regulation, the University of Bridgeport's women's basketball team dropped a 44-39 matchup to St. Thomas Aquinas College on Tuesday night inside Hubbell Gym. The non-conference defeat shifts the Purple Knights' record to 9-9 this season while remaining at 7-6 in the CACC.
After trailing by as many as 19 points early in the second half, the Purple Knights stormed back with a 16-2 run to open the fourth quarter and pull within a single point with under two minutes remaining in regulation.
UB showed terrific resolve during the late surge to climb back within one at 40-39, but STAC narrowly held off the Purple Knights. Bridgeport was unable to score over the final 1:46 of regulation.
Nicole Benini and Savannah Prescott paced the UB offense with 10 points apiece, while Prescott added seven rebounds and a team-high three steals.
Prescott has now reached double-figure points in 12 games this season (team high).
Niyah Whitten chipped in eight points on Tuesday and India Lee provided a spark off the bench with a team-leading nine rebounds to go along with six points.
Mireya Johnson also contributed off the bench with an important three-pointer that cut the STAC edge to 40-37 with 2:13 left in the fourth quarter.
Benini then knocked in a pair of free throws to trim the advantage to 40-39 with 1:46 left.
