Big Third Quarter Propels Women's Basketball Past Goldey-Beacom, 69-65
Purple Knights earn 10th win of the year, their highest single-season total since 2018-19.
WILMINGTON, Del. – Closing out the regular season ahead of next week's CACC Tournament, the University of Bridgeport women's basketball team secured a 69-65 road victory at Goldey-Beacom on Saturday. The win marked the Purple Knights' 10th of the year, their highest single-season total since the 2018-19 campaign.
Trailing by three at the break (34-31), the Purple Knights erupted out of halftime with an 18-3 run that flipped the game and built a double-digit cushion they would not relinquish.
Bridgeport outscored the Lightning 21-5 in the third quarter, shooting a blistering 57.1 percent from the field in the period while holding Goldey-Beacom to just one made basket.
The Purple Knights then opened the fourth quarter with the first five points to stretch their lead to as many as 19 before holding off a late Lightning push.
UB matched its season high with 12 three-pointers and committed just 10 turnovers—tying a season low—while forcing 20 Goldey-Beacom miscues that led to a 31-10 advantage in points off turnovers.
Four players reached double figures and combined for 58 of Bridgeport's 69 points. Niyah Whitten poured in a career-high 19 points, knocking down five three-pointers, while Zahkiyyah Frazier recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Savannah Prescott added 13 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals, and Nicole Benini chipped in 12 points with three makes from beyond the arc.
Mireya Johnson was sensational defensively, racking up seven steals to go along with a team-high six assists, helping fuel Bridgeport's game-changing third-quarter run.
