Three Purple Knights Selected For Weekly ECAC Corvais Division II Women's Gymnastics Awards
Ajiea Hargrave, Kelly Aycock And Maritza Futch Recognized For Their Fine Performances
Danbury, Conn.-Three members of the University of Bridgeport women's gymnastics team have been selected as winners of Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Corvias Women's Gymnastics Athletes of the Week Awards for the week ending January 24, 2016 for their outstanding performances in a quad meet hosted by Brown University on Sunday.
Junior Ajiea Hargrave (Allentown, Pa.) earned ECAC Corvais Division II Specialist of the Week honors, and freshmen Kelly Aycock (Locust Grove, Ga.) and Maritza Futch (Atlanta, Ga.) were selected as the ECAC Division II Rookie of the Week and Coaches' Choice Award winners respectively.
Hargrave posted a strong showing in two events in Bridgeport's quad meet last weekend. The junior claimed top spot in the floor exercise with a score of 9.825, and also finished third in the vault with a 9.70 out of a possible 9.80 start value.
Competing in her first collegiate meet for the Purple Knights, Aycock scored a 9.75 on the floor exercise in Bridgeport's quad meet against Brown, Southern Connecticut State and Rhode Island College. The mark tied her for third in the event, as Bridgeport finished in second in the team standings.
Futch garnered solid scores in her two events for UB last week. The freshman notched Bridgeport's highest score on the uneven bars with a score of 9.575. Maritza then turned in a score of 9.425 on the balance beam, an event in which she had not been slated to compete until just prior to the meet.
This weekend the University of Bridgeport women's gymnastics team will be busy competing at Yale on Saturday and hosting Cornell University on Sunday.
