Four UB Student-Athletes Earn Weekly ECC Honors
Women's Soccer Julia Hansson and Jenny Hwang, Men's Soccer Danny Hernandez and Volleyball Biljana Savic Earn East Coast Conference Accolades
Central Islip, N.Y.-Four University of Bridgeport student-athletes have earned East Coast Conference Player of the Week honors for the first week of the 2011 Fall Sports seasons. From the women's soccer team, sophomore goalkeeper Julia Hansson (Tocksfors, Sweden) has been selected Defensive Player of the Week honors and freshman midfielder Jenny Hwang (Manchester, Conn.) earned Rookie of the Week accolades. From the men's soccer team, junior goalie Danny Hernandez (Bay Shore, N.Y.) was named Defensive Player of the Week, and from the women's volleyball team, freshman Biljana Savic (Novi Sad, Serbia) was named Rookie of the Week.
Hansson was outstanding in the Bridgeport net over the weekend allowing only one goal and recording 17 total saves in two matches as she helped the Purple Knights open the 2011 with wins over AIC and UMass Lowell. In a 2-1 triumph over AIC, Julia made eight saves, and she followed that performance up with a brilliant nine save shut out versus UMass Lowell in UB's 1-0 win. Hwang was all over the field in her collegiate debut over the weekend helping the University of Bridgeport women's soccer notch wins over AIC and UMass Lowell. In the victory over nationally-ranked AIC, Jenny assisted on her team's first goal of the 2011 season.
Hernandez made seven saves facing 14 shots as he posted a 2-0 shutout in UB's season-opening 2-0 win over # 12 ranked Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday night.
Two student-athletes, seniors Kasey Kenny (Staten Island, N.Y.) from women's soccer and Fernanda Costa (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) from women's volleyball were also named to the ECC Honor Roll for the week in their respective sports.
