Purple Knights Sweep Weekly Conference Women's Soccer Awards
Pulse, Hansson and Munro Honored By The East Coast Conference
Central Islip, N.Y.-The University of Bridgeport women's soccer team has swept this week's East Coast Conference weekly awards with junior Asia Pulse (New Haven, Conn.) being named ECC Offensive Player of the Week, sophomore goalkeeper Julia Hansson (Tockfors, Sweden) being selected the conference's Defensive Player of the Week for the sixth straight time and seventh time this season and freshman Gillian Munro (Manchester, England) being named conference Rookie of the Week.
Pulse helped the Purple Knights go 2-0 last week by scoring four goals to tally eight points. In a 7-0 home win over Wilmington on Thursday, Asia netted a hat trick, and she followed that up with one goal in a 5-0 road win over St. Thomas Aquinas. On the season, she has scored six goals and added one assist for 13 points.
Hansson continued her top-notch play in net for the Purple Knights so far in 2011 as she notched her tenth and eleventh clean sheets of the season tying the school record for single-season shutouts. In a 7-0 win over Wilmington, she made five saves and in a 5-0 road win at STAC, she made three saves. So far this year, Hansson has a minuscule 0.21 goals against average having allowed only three goals in 14 matches, and her saves percentage is .962.
Munro, who has started every game this season at fullback for the number one ranked Purple Knights, helped her team clinch the ECC regular season crown last week and post two more victories to lift UB's unblemished season record to 14-0-0 with a 7-0 home win over Wilmington and a 5-0 win at STAC. In the two wins, Munro led a defense that limited the opposition to a total of only 17 shots on the week in the two matches. As a team, Bridgeport has allowed a total of only three goals in 14 matches so far in 2011.
