Track and Field's Richards and Vandelli Earn CACC Weekly Awards
Edoardo Vandelli, CACC Track Athlete of the Week | Fiona Richards, CACC Field Athlete of the Week
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Following stellar performances during the Purple Knights' outdoor opener, Fiona Richards and Edoardo Vandelli of the University of Bridgeport's track and field teams both earned weekly awards from the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) on Tuesday. Richards was named as CACC's Field Athlete of the Week while Vandelli earned Track Athlete of the Week honors.
Richards put together a standout discus performance at the Charlotte 49er Classic, posting a throw of 46.65 meters. The mark not only shattered UB's program record but also surpassed the NCAA provisional standard by more than a full meter. Competing against a strong Division I field, Richards finished third overall, trailing only a pair of throwers from Pittsburgh. Her distance currently ranks 11th in all of NCAA Division II.
Vandelli turned in a record-setting performance at the Charlotte 49er Classic, highlighting the weekend with a personal-best and school-record time in the 1500m on Friday. That mark (4:02.17) currently stands as the fastest in the East Region this season. Vandelli continued his strong showing by also posting a 1:59.79 in the 800m, which likewise ranks as the top time in the East this year.
UB's track and field teams will return to action on Saturday at the AIC Invitational.
