Indianapolis, Ind.-The University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team, under the direction of fourth-year head coach Leo Uzcategui, will open play in the 2012 NCAA Division II Championship East Regional hosted by the University of New Haven in West Haven, Connecticut, on Thursday, November 29, when the number two seed Purple Knights face the number seven seed, Dowling College Golden Lions. This year's marks the fifth consecutive NCAA appearance for UB. Last season, Bridgeport won the NCAA Division II East Regional for the first time in school history defeating NYIT, Dowling and the host University of New Haven. UB fell to the University of Tampa in the 2011 National Quarterfinals hosted by Cal State San Bernardino. In 2010, the Purple Knights defeated American International and New Haven before falling in the regional final to Dowling for the second straight season. In 2009, Bridgeport topped UMass Lowell and New Haven before falling to Dowling. In 2008, Bridgeport, making the program's first-ever NCAA trip, defeated Bentley University in its regional opener before falling to Dowling College in the regional semifinals.
Bridgeport and Dowling, both members of the East Coast Conference, have already met three times this year with the Purple Knights winning each time, the last time on Friday evening in the East Coast Conference Championship Tournament semifinals. The Purple Knights would then win the 2012 ECC crown, the team's second in the last four seasons, with a four-set win over LIU Post on Saturday.
Joining UB and Dowling in the 2012 NCAA Division II Championship East Regional are: number one seed, University of New Haven, number three seed Adelphi University, number four seed NYIT, number five seed Franklin Pierce, number six seed, LIU Post and number eight seed, Dominican (N.Y.) College.
UB enters this year's NCAA Championship with an overall record of 25-4. The Purple Knights have won 13 matches in a row. Dowling is 20-14.
