Melanie Smith Selected ECC Volleyball Rookie Of The Week
Averaged 3.7 Kills And 2.8 Digs In Three Matches Last Week
West Babylon, N.Y.-University of Bridgeport freshman outside hitter Melanie Smith (Ft. Collins, Colo.) has been named the East Coast Conference Women's Volleyball Rookie of the Week for her fine play in matches that took place from September 27 through October 3, 2021.
Smith was outstanding for UB last week, notching double-digit kills in all three matches and falling just shy of three double-doubles, as she averaged 3.7 kills and 2.8 digs per set. At New Haven, Melanie slammed 13 kills with 13 digs. She followed that up with a match-best 16 kills and nine digs in a home win over Queens, and then closed out the banner week with 15 kills and 12 digs at Molloy. Smith also had four blocks and two assists on the week.
This is the fourth time this season that a Purple Knight has received ECC Rookie of the Week accolades, as Melanie's classmate Paola Hernandez (Bayamon, P.R.) has won the award three times.
Also this week, setter Jaden Drollinger (Fr., Queens Creek, Az.) was named to the ECC Honor Roll for volleyball for the fourth time this season.
This will be a busy week for the University of Bridgeport volleyball team, as the Purple Knights will play three matches traveling to St. Anselm College on Wednesday night and hosting ECC matches with D'Youville and Daemen on Saturday and Sunday at 12 noon each day.
