Volleyball Splits Two Matches To Open Barry University Invitational In Florida

Miami Shores, Fla.- The University of Bridgeport women's volleyball team opened play in the Barry University Classic on Friday, and the Purple Knights split two matches, losing in four sets in the first match of the day against Saginaw Valley State University. 15-25, 16-25, 25-22 and 21-25.  In Friday's finale, the Purple Knights swept I-95 rival Southern Connecticut State University, 25-14, 25-16 and 25-23.  UB has now defeated SCSU twice so far in 2018.  The Purple Knights are now 2-1 on the young 2018 season.

Against Saginaw Valley, junior Galia Nankin (Ra'anana, Israel), classmate Emily Burford (Albuquerque, N.M.) and freshman Breanna Jones (Littleton, Colo.) led the Purple Knights with seven kills.  Nankin also totaled 12 digs.  Senior Ellie Rich (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) had 29 assists. On defense, sophomore Klein Johnson (San Antonio, Texas) and freshman Breanna Jones (Littleton, Colo.), each had 13 digs

Against SCSU, Nankin again led the team with 11 kills, and freshman Taylor Hyatt (Broomfield, Colo.) added nine.  Buford also contributed another seven kills in Friday's second match, and Rich totaled 32 assists.  Johnson had 15 digs to lead Bridgeport on defense.

The UB women's volleyball team will wrap up action at the Barry University Classic on Saturday with matches against Texas A&M-Kingsville and host Barry University.
